The competitions held over this past weekend at FlagRaiders Paintball in Kitchener ON marks a milestone in CXBL/MXL/RXL history as a total of 4 separate playing fields ran games concurrently, a first in this region and quite possible all of Canada. Teams from across Ontario appeared to smash it out in the race to NAX, and smash it out is a real understatement!

Games worthy of note had to be the Rockstar franchise, the team practiced hard and it paid off with a landslide victory over Guelph 16-1 in the RXL for the first day of competitions. To move forward, Alex Medina, manager for Rockstar, mentioned having to face off versus two very tough clubs in Sundays competition. Rockstar did go on to defeat Essex Defiant 12-5 and in their final match up against Mississauga Hate narrowly won with a point spread of 7-6.

In the CXBL, the Catshack observed Toronto Rage who dominated Semper Fi 22-2 and went on to
achieve victory over Kitchener Recon leaving Recon needing to get the win over Windsor Lockdown in order to stay in the running for NAX. As Louie D’Alesio of BuyPbl so aptly put it, “Recon vs Lockdown, I called this particular matchup as THE nailbiter of the weekend”, Louie was right on the money. Kitchener Recon came out swinging, on more than one occasion Thomas “The Troll” Taylor zipped down the snake at times taking a one for one while team mate Nelson Fonseca snatched the flag to score the point. As the first half wound down Recon was ahead 6-1 which for all appearances purposes had them with certain victory in their sights.

As the clock buzzed signaling the second half of the match commencing, Recon managed to net themselves a couple of penalties which proved disastrous against a caliber team like Windsor Lockdown. With pros such as Drew Templeton and Nick Slowiak on board competing with Lockdown, the penalties completely derailed the Recon locomotive, it wasn’t long before Lockdown tied the game. Templeton quite often split right to take back position while Slowiak shot left to protect the other Lockdown players moving forward. In a stunning upset Lockdown went on to take the match 10-7 leaving Recon with very disappointed players. For the match both Templeton and Slowiak were awarded NAX Stars as was Nolan Stor of Recon.

Speaking further with Louie D’Alesio, the weekend long event most certainly marks growth in speedball with so many teams and onlookers present and the necessity to have 4 playing areas. Further still the support of fields and industry have been paramount to the success of the XBall series that is the CXBL, MXL, RXL. Beyond G.I Milsim, and BuyPBL, the series also has the support this year from Style2 Supply, Sup Airball, Empire and Sly Equipment. Props to Todd Ancich and FlagRaiders staff who worked tirelessly in preparation for the series this past weekend. Erecting four fields is no small task and FlagRaiders pulled it off in style as always. Great job!
